This little stranded hand knit vest is so striking. Its overall damask pattern repeat elevates it from just another vest to a couture knit for special occasions. While it can be worn with semi-formal eveningwear, it dresses up a pair of jeans as well.
Fronts and back are knit together in one piece up to the armholes. All edges have eyelet edging. A single front button and buttonhole hold the jacquard knitted vest closed.
This fair isle vest incorporates my original charted design repeat. While not bona fide "fair isle", I am not a fan of pointed star type narrow bands of stranded colorwork. I created an overall wispy, curvy balanced mesh of shapes in which no individual elements demanded attention or created a linear pattern.
One other example of my use of this particular stranded colorwork pattern motif is in my Stranded Knit Jacket (at https://www.conniehester.com/stranded-knit-jacket-pattern.htm).
The yarn I used for this stranded hand knit damask vest is a sock weight / fingering weight yarn. I used 3/2 perle cotton (Size 3 perle; 1260 yds per lb; 18 wraps per inch).
Knit gauge in Stockinette Stitch with only one strand of yarn is 7 stitches and 10 rows per inch on Size 3 US needles. The stranding on the inside of this colorwork vest produces a wonderful slightly firm light jacket weight which I love, as well as the look of a couture finish inside.
