This hand knit Butterfly Eyelet Socks pattern has an overall eyelet pattern which resembles butterlies. Although it appears to be a very complex pattern design, it is actually very, very easy - perfect for beginners. Of the 12 rows in the Pattern Stitch, only 4 rows involve anything other than just plain knitting every row! Easy-to-follow yarn-overs and pairs of stitches knit together create the butterfly eyelets on these hand knit socks. This Pattern Stitch produces a look somewhat similar to my Hand Knit Socks with Diamond Lace Pattern.
400 yards of size 5/2 perle cotton yarn (Size 5 perle; 24-26 wpi) were used to knit these socks, producing a fine, smooth gauge which is comfortable against the skin in all weather. The soles are knit in plain Stockinette Stitch (knitting every row, in the round), so they are smooth against the soles of the feet. Reinforced heel. Knit from the cuff-down.
Perle cotton is a favorite amongst home dyers, too, so these socks could be dyed as desired.
Knit gauge in Stockinette Stitch is 9 stitches and 14 rows per inch on size 1 US needles, but any yarn with this gauge could be substituted.
Since the butterfly eyelet produces an openwork pattern, these socks have plenty of elasticity, which sometimes needs to be addressed when using cotton yarns in socks. Guidance is also included in the pattern for adapting these hand knit socks to personal fit.
As mentioned elsewhere, I like to layer socks on the coldest days of winter. Since I wear clogs for my square feet, I have fun mixing my hand knit socks. Those with lace and eyelet pattern designs afford an extra element of interest when worn over contrasting colors. Below right is a photo of this sock worn over a black sock to emphasize the eyelets.
SO-O-O EASY! The Hand Knit Daisy Eyelet Socks have single eyelets arranged to suggest flowers scattered overall. These simple socks could be further embellished with duplicate stitch embroidery to provide stems and flower centers, if desired.
The Daisy Eyelet Socks use about 400 yards of cotton-lycra, or any yarn which creates a gauge of 9 stitches and 14 rows to the inch on size 1 US needles. The foot bed is knitted in smooth Stockinette Stitch (every row is knit, in the round), and heels are reinforced for longer wear. Socks are knitted from the cuff-down.
I LOVE the softness of this cotton-lycra yarn. It has the soft and fluffy quality of a brushed yarn. While the 5/2 perle cotton yarn I normally use for hand knit socks is comfortable year-round here in hot, humid Texas, I would have to relegate these cotton-lycra socks to strictly cool weather wear. In other parts of the country, cotton-lycra might be fine for year-round wear. The Daisy Eyelet pattern would also be more pronounced with the perle cotton.
Directions include how to alter for individual fit.
SUPER EASY single eyelets are incorporated all over the hand knit Single Eyelet Socks pattern. They provide just a bit of femininity to an otherwise simple sock.
Like the Hand Knit Butterfly Eyelet Socks Pattern above, these eyelet socks are knitted from the cuff-down and use about 400 yards of Size 5 perle cotton. They have the same knit gauge, on the same size needles as well. These hand knitted socks also feature a smooth Stockinette Stitch foot bed with a reinforced heel.
Instruction is included for adapting these socks to fit individual adult foot size.
If a totally plain Stockinette Stitch sock is desired, this sock pattern could be used, and the eyelets could simply be omitted.
