Bring on the wind and cold. This bulky knit coat will keep you warm and cozy. A faced shawl collar can be worn high around the neck or fashionably folded down. Facing edges have a crisp foldline.
Buttonholes may be knitted in place or crocheted loops may be added after knitting is completed. Complete instructions are included for both options. Two buttons sit a bit above the waistline. The fashion buttons have been created by layering 3 multi-sized buttons on top of each other for interest. Any buttons of your choice would be appropriate as well. Truth be told, I flat forgot to include the knit-in buttonholes, much to my chagrin. Chalk this up to working hit or miss through the holidays.
The best fitting garments are those which fit at the shoulders. This applies to coats with a tailored look as well. While I increase ease on the body for a roomier fit with coats, I still maintain the shoulder width of the body. Further tailoring includes waistline shaping which extends from the bottom edge up to the armholes, as well as back neck shaping to prevent shoulder seams slipping to the backside and hiking up the front edge. Detailed instructions also include measurements which allow for fine-tuning the overall fit.
I chose 2 worsted-weight yarns and 1 heavy worsted weight yarn to hold together as for one strand throughout. Gauge in Stockinette Stitch is 14 sts x 20 rows = 5 inches on Size 11 US needles. This creates a stable gauge which will not sag, stretch, or distort - without being as stiff as what is produced with needles two sizes smaller. The yarns I chose contain cotton and blends, so the coat shown here is also pretty heavy in weight, which I love. Not everyone does, but any combination of yarns which yields gauge will produce a fabulous bulky coat.
Required Yardage: 1200 [1300, 1400, 1550, 1700, 1900, 2100, 2250] yds. Yardage inside the pattern is also broken down into requirements for the combination of the 8 wpi, 11 wpi, and 13 wpi three yarns like I used to produce gauge.
