I absolutely love this knit hemmed jacket with its flirty subtle peplum and optional textured border patterning. Both elements add just enough to dress it up for church and evening wear while remaining perfect for a day at the office or a quick run to the grocery. The tailored lines add sophistication to the playful flare towards the bottom edge. To the right is a photo of the knit hemmed peplum jacket unbuttoned, to reference the length below the waistline, which is easily altered according to individual taste.
I am especially happy with the fit of this knit jacket since the shoulder width is perfect. More than anything else, shoulder width is the key to a well-fitted garment. "Shoulder width" refers to the measurement between the little bumps on top of both shoulders, BEFORE the ball joints - not between the far ends of the ball joints. Compare the shoulder fit of this knitted jacket with the fit of the shoulder width on my light blue and striped knit lapel-collared jackets (at https://www.conniehester.com/knit-short-jacket-pattern.htm) where I mistakenly knit them to fit my outer shoulder measurement. I still love the 2 jackets and wear them a lot, but now I know where the shoulder width of properly tailored knit jackets should be.
The heathered yarn used in this hemmed peplum jacket makes it a bit difficult to see the textural bordering in the photos, so a close-up is included at left. Click on the image for a larger view.
The double-knit collar on this peplum cardigan provides its own support. It does not flop about or splay flat against the shoulders. It stands on its own as it should. Instructions are provided for making the double-knitting very easy. It has an immaculate finish along both inside and outside neck edge.
Neatly constructed buttonholes on the Right Front are repeated on the Right Front Facing, and crisp turn rows are created for all hems and facings. Both Fronts and the Back are knit together in one piece up to the Armhole. Since it is impossible to design for every possible body shape and design option, measurements are included throughout the instructions to allow adjustments to be made for the perfect personal fit, as desired.
This knit peplum cardigan is a good candidate for including horizontal and/or vertical bust darts for a more tailored fit across the chest. For more information about knitted contour shaping, refer to my Knitting Bust Darts Tutorial at https://www.conniehester.com/knitting-bust-darts.htm
Knit gauge in Stockinette Stitch is 5 stitches and 7 rows per inch on Size 7 US needles. This produces a fairly standard worsted gauge.
Required Yardage: 1104 [1176, 1375, 1458, 1644, 1883, 2005, 2231] yds worsted weight yarn.
