$14.00 Pattern #605a - Jewel Neckline version
Dress it up or dress it down. This darling Chanel-style stranded colorwork jacket looks as great over a cocktail dress as it does with a pair of jeans.
I photographed sample illustrations against white garments to best show the shaping details, especially when comparing necklines between this version (Version A) and Version B. I often wear this stranded tailored jacket with my black blouse, though, as illustrated to the right. This version includes a Chanel-style jewel neckline. For a neckline 1/2" larger all around, see Version B at https://www.conniehester.com/stranded-colorwork-jacket-pattern2.htm
The fair-isle body is knitted in one piece from the bottom up to the armholes. Short stranding on the inside of the knit sweater jacket gives the appearance of a finished couture lining. Crisp turn rows are featured along the bottom hemmed edges of the knit jacket, the wrist edges of the sleeves, and the folded front and neck bands. The front and neck edgings create a firm structured support which does not roll.
For the perfect fit, measurements are included throughout the instructions for each of the 8 sizes at every step. Exact starting points within the stranded colorwork repeats are included for each portion of this lovely hand knit damask cardigan. Stitch and row counts are included as you check your progress.
Front bands meet at the center front of the body. While I chose not to include buttons on this knit jacquard jacket, if desired, it would be easy to attach hidden hooks (as in the illustration at left, below), brass closures, button loops, or frogs.
Choose high contrast between the two colors of yarn as I did here, or achieve a more frosted look with close values in the same color family. For this, see examples in my Jacquard Knit Jacket (at https://www.conniehester.com/jaquard-knit-jacket-pattern.htm) and my Stranded Knit Jacket (at https://www.conniehester.com/stranded-knit-jacket-pattern.htm). Another high contrast example may be seen at Damask Knit Coat (at https://www.conniehester.com/damask-knit-coat-pattern.htm).
The weight of this knitted jacquard jacket is what I would call comforting. It definitely has Chanel-style body, but it is not heavy. Since it is warm and humid so much of the year where I live, I prefer to knit with a cotton sock weight / fingering weight yarn, but any fiber of your choosing would be appropriate. I also like the flexibility of being able to easily dye the 3/2 perle cotton (Size 3 perle; 1260 yds per lb; 18 wraps per inch) which I used in fiber-reactive Procion MX dye.
Knitting gauge in Stockinette Stitch with a single strand of yarn is 7 stitches and 10 rows per inch on Size 3 US needles, for reference. This gauge produces a stable knitted fabric which does not sag or distort with wear. The stranding on the inside when using the 2 colors produces the delightful light jacket-weight which I love.
The damask colorwork design repeat is one of my own original pattern charts and has become a favorite for use in many existing styles of hand knit clothing patterns as well as in home decor items, like pillows, throws, bed coverings, and wall hangings.
