Pure elegance in a hand knit tailored coat. Side shaping enhances the femininity of this three-quarter length knit coat, and the look of lace is created with the high contrast between the dove gray and charcoal colors. A doubled kimono collar band extends from the front bottom edges to the back of the neck.

The body is knitted in one piece from the bottom up to the armholes. Short stranding on the backside of the knit fabric gives a finished look to the inside, while the doubled kimono collar provides a couture finish to the inside of the front band. Crisp turn rows are featured along the bottom hemmed edges of the couture knit coat, the wrist edges of the sleeves, and the folded front bands.

Damask Knit Coat Pattern with Kimono Collar 2 by Connie Hester For a perfect fit, measurements are included throughout the instructions for each of the 8 sizes at every step. Exact starting points within the stranded colorwork repeats are included for each portion of this lovely hand knit damask jacket. Stitch and row counts are included as you check your progress.

Front bands meet at the center front of the body. While I chose for this knit damask coat to hang open, it could just as easily be held closed with brass closures, button loops, or frogs fashioned from this yarn. If buttoning is preferred, extending the fronts a bit could be easily achieved since there is no neckline to re-fashion.

For a more frosted effect, with color choices closer in hue, refer to my Jacquard Knit Jacket (at http://www.conniehester.com/jaquard-knit-jacket-pattern.htm) and my Stranded Knit Jacket (at http://www.conniehester.com/stranded-knit-jacket-pattern.htm).

The yarn I used for this stranded hand knit damask coat is a sock weight / fingering weight yarn. Living in the often oppressive heat and humidity of Texas, I prefer to knit with cotton, but any fiber would be appropriate. The 3/2 perle cotton (1260 yds per lb, or 18 wraps per inch) which I used can also be dyed easily in fiber-reactive Procion MX dye, which I do frequently.

Knit gauge in Stockinette Stitch with only one strand of yarn is 7 stitches and 10 rows per inch on Size 3 US needles. The stranding on the inside when using the 2 colors produces a wonderful light jacket-weight which I love. This gauge creates knitwear with a stable knit fabric which does not sag or distort with wear.

The stranded damask design repeat is one of my own original pattern charts and would also look amazing in many existing styles of hand knit clothing patterns as well as in home decor items, like pillows, throws, bed coverings, and wall hangings.
