RED: about 130 yds sport-weight yarn which produces gauge
BLACK: about 70 yds sport-weight yarn which produces gauge

NEEDLES:
Size 3 US double-point needles
Size 3 US circular needle, 16" long (optional)
Crochet hook or tapestry needle
10 stitch markers with 1 of a different color (or other obvious difference)

GAUGE: 7 sts x 9 1/2 rows per inch

DIRECTIONS:
With Red, cast on 112 sts. Join in the round, and work 2 rows K1, P1 rib. Break Red.
Attach Black, and continue rib for 46 more rows (5", for 3 1/2" fold-up). Cut Black.
Attach Red, and knit every row (Stockinette Stitch in the round) for 44 rows. [10" total from cast-on]
On next row, k2tog on sts 1-2 and sts 57-58. At the same time, place a marker after every 11 sts (counting the k2tog as 1 st). Maintain different color marker at beg of row.
Work 1 row even.
On next row, k2tog to left of each marker. Repeat every other row over total of 20 rows.
Cut yarn, leaving an 8" tail. With crochet hook or tapestry needle, pull yarn through last 10 sts. Pull yarn end to inside of cap, and secure end.

APPLIQUE: This particular personalized applique is one which I created on fabric myself. Any purchased applique may be attached by sewing by hand or machine along the outside edges to the knit hat. I stretched the knit sts a bit as I sewed in order to prevent any binding up of the brim once it was put upon a head.
