Hester has been a professional fiber collage artist since 1980 and has been designing wearable art clothing for over 50 years, creating patterns for clothing and accessories for the public since 1981. She created SPEED GRIDS, for speed-piecing triangle-blocks, in 1989, and wrote WINNING WAYS To Make Quilts in 1992. Her book, IMPROVISATIONAL DESIGN IN QUILTS using paper foundations, 1998, remains the only book of its kind to help others break into improvisational design in quilts with tangible tools while retaining an orderly substructure of squares and rectangles. Her collection of designer knit patterns reflects over 50 years of experience designing and creating patterns for hand knit clothing and accessories.
As a Reading Specialist, Hester taught ages 3 to 18 in a psychiatric hospital on a medical school campus. She has since taught children and adults in private schools, international art and quilt industries' consumer and retailer conferences, college campus art classes, invitational appearances, and independent workshops.
